I always recommend students start by learning the classical guitar technique that can inform all their later playing styles. But by ten, students may have already decided on a particular type of guitar they'd like to learn, whether that's classical, steel-string acoustic, electric, or bass. Or they may be interested in a different stringed instrument, like the mandolin, banjo, or ukelele -- all of which I teach. They also may want to experiment a little to figure out what feels good to them. I believe it's key to let students pursue their interests and explore all the types of stringed instruments.
If you need some help choosing, I can demonstrate each instrument and let you experiment with them during our first few lessons. That way you will be able to make an informed decision about what to play.
